Natural contaminants in infant food: The case of regulated and emerging mycotoxins

Breast milk substitutes, e.g. infant formulae, are commonly introduced to the diet within first months of life. As infants’ detoxifying capability is not fully developed, it vital importance minimize their exposure food contaminants. Here, we present a comprehensive multi-mycotoxin assessment in food. Samples from Austrian and Czech market (n = 59) were screened for 46 mycotoxins key metabolites using two complementary LC-MS/MS methods. Trace levels 17 mycotoxins, including aflatoxin B1 (0.4 ?g/kg), zearalenone (<2.3 deoxynivalenol (<131 ?g/kg) fumonisin (<39 detected. Infant formulae contaminated at lower compared cereal-based products. Overall, concentrations most toxins near or below respective LOQ values. However, raw flour samples exceeded regulatory limit foods. Interestingly, reported previously, namely aflatoxicol sterigmatocystin, identified 3 17% foods, respectively.
